[SKAO] COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH CNRS

On the 7th of March 2022, the SKA Observatory (SKAO) signed a cooperation agreement with the CNRS during a ceremony hosted at the Australian Embassy in Paris.

The agreement will allow French scientific and industrial communities to continue their engagement with the SKAO and participate – in anticipation of full membership – to the construction of the world’s largest radio telescopes in Australia and South Africa.

France will be able to make its first financial contributions and, in turn, the French industry will have the possibility to be awarded construction contracts in the coming months.

The cooperation agreement thus constitutes an interim step to the accession of France to the SKAO that should be completed during 2022 and 2023.

Indeed, in May 2021 the SKAO’s governing Council decided unanimously to admit France as a member and President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his intention to ratify the SKA Convention on a state visit to South Africa later that month.

Moreover, on the 8th of March, the SKAO was listed by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation as an international scientific organization on the 2021 National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures.
